Red mushrooms grew rapidly from the forest floor—then, much to my horror, a pair of eyes peered up from under the mushrooms. I froze in a combination of terror and exertion as a woman with pale blue skin and a ghastly face painted in what looked like dripping blood rose before me. “I am the Blood Vision Oracle.” She said in a raspy whisper. “The Lost Forest is full of secrets. I know the truth as told by the mycelium webs beneath us. Their tiny white webs interlace in the darkness below. Their knowledge reaches far beyond the Lost Forest.” She considered me as she stopped rising from the shaggy moss of the forest floor, at her hips.

“I’m lost. My bride to be fled to the North, but I fear she has become as lost as I have. Do you know where she is?” I asked.
“I can tell you what has, and what will be if you are willing to listen. The trouble is the past rarely changes and the future is fluid. I can only see those who have spilled blood upon the great web.” She said.
“Can you see if she is alive?” I asked.
“Only if her blood has been spilled.” She said without emotion. “Give me your hand.”
I held out my hand.
“Come closer.” She said.
Once I was in reach she snatched my hand with unnatural speed and something akin to electricity passed between us. My body stiffened, then convulsed. I was unable to let go or speak. Finally after what felt like an eternity she let go.
“She has spilled no blood in the Lost Forest.” She announced in her gravely ancient voice.
“Can I see the future?” I asked, catching my breath. “Will I find her?”
“That will cost you three moons and a drop of blood.” She sunk a bit as she spoke. “I cannot lie. I cannot leave this place. I slumber and wait to retrieve Blood Visions. All the days are one. Future and past live together down here. I do not not how many days and moons have passed. I only know the brief pleasure of lost visitors and the torture of loneliness.” As she spoke she’d sunken to just below her breast. “How do I give you three moons? What does that mean?” I asked. “Two moon cycles of your life.” She explained. “You must promise them to me with your blood.” “How can you possibly do that?” I asked in a high tone. I was starting to shake from fear or exhaustion, or both. “This is my prison. I’m cursed to live amongst the burrowing beetles and tangled roots until all the moons have been collected.” I pulled the knife from the sheath on my belt. “It must pass from your tongue to mine for me to speak of the future.” She grinned in a revolting way, bearing yellow teeth. “Come closer.”

She parted her red lips and opened her mouth as she finished speaking. I crawled, closing the few feet that were between us. I raised the knife to my mouth, stuck out my tongue, and made a small slice on the tip of it. Without warning she popped up from the forest floor with alarming stealth and two arms rose with her. Her blue hands grasped the back of my head and firmly locked onto my hair. I let out a shocked cry, but it was muffled by her long forked tongue that slipped into my open mouth and down my throat. I couldn’t breathe. The world swam around me.
