As I walked along that meandering path in the Lost Forest with sleep still in my eyes I came upon a massive oak tree. From a hole in the side of the great oak protruded a clump of toadstools that shifted and grew outward. Then, to my amazement, a woman’s face appeared under them, then her shoulders, then before I had time to consider what was happening she’d climbed out of the hole entirely and shimmied down the trunk, gracefully landing on her feet.

“I see what you must know. You must see what I know.” She said in very slow, drawn-out words. Each soft sound was slurred with a hiss at the end. “Centuries have slipped by. Bears and moose have rubbed on my tree, awakening me from my hibernation. But only you can set me free. For now I am awake to see. To see for you.”

She strange creature was walking in incredibly slow strides in my direction. She then bowed before me. “My Queen has arrived at last.”

“You must be confused, my name is Charlotte and I’m from a farm just beyond the boundary.” I told the strange woman.

A smile slowly made its way across her face. She reach over her chest with her right arm and scratched at the row of toadstools growing on her left side. She stretched and looked at the sky for a long time. I began to wonder if she’d become stuck that way when she spoke again.

“Charlotte, yes. You are the Young Queen. That is why I am here. My curse is to be joined with this oak until your passing. Here you are. You must see, to set me free.” She took two more long dreamy strides and reached out with her thin fingers. “Please, take my hand child.”

Hesitantly, I reached out and set my hand in hers. The long boney fingers were cool to the touch and damp with the morning dew. They reminded me of a frog’s belly both in color and texture. Her other hand drifted fro her side where she’d been picking at the smaller toadstools adorning her left side, and gently closed over mine. That’s when everything when bright. I will call it white, because there is no other word for the blankness and brightness that overcame me. I saw an older version of myself in the mirror. A much younger woman, no older than a teen, was helping my tie a corset. We chatted, but I couldn’t hear anything. She turned and picked up something in the background—it was a crown of gleaming gemstones inlaid in gold. She placed it upon my head. I said something to her, turned and the vision clouded to nothingness. I will call the nothingness black, for lack of words to describe the odd in-betweens.

A flash of white again—another window into the future. A man in a hooded cape entered a dimly lit room. A woman rose from the bed and embraced him. Her hair was long and blue. They kissed passionately as they hastily undressed. She leaned away from him allowing the light from a candle to illuminate his face—it was Jacob.
